Social media image size

With our social feeds becoming more and more busy, standing out from the crowd is getting harder than ever - but one of the key ways to boost the performance of your social posts is to ensure that your images look clear, crisp and attractive to users as they scroll through.

But in order to maximize your visual assets, you have to post them in the right sizes and formats to align with each network - which, given there are so many platforms, can be difficult.

As designers, we’ve all been there: you create a beautiful new Facebook or Twitter cover photo, only to have the platform change its social media image sizes the next day.

Social media and visual content go hand in hand, and social networking sites frequently update their social media image sizes and formats to promote a rich visual experience. In general, this has been good for businesses that can keep up; numerous studies demonstrate that visual content is much more engaging than just text.

With our social feeds becoming more and more busy, standing out from the crowd is getting harder than ever – but one of the key ways to boost the performance of your social posts is to ensure that your images look clear, crisp and attractive to users as they scroll through.

But in order to maximize your visual assets, you have to post them in the right sizes and formats to align with each network – which, given there are so many platforms, can be difficult.

According to Hubspot, 90% of the information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000 times faster by the brain than text is. In effect, this means that whether on your website or on your social media platforms, the images that represent your brand have a much greater impact on your audience than anything else.

As social media platforms add new features and rework existing ones, it’s often difficult for graphic designers and inbound marketers to keep track of the dimensions for profile photos, cover photos, and backgrounds. We know it’s been a challenge for us!

FACEBOOK

Profile Picture: 180 x 180 pixels – Profile pictures must be at least 180 x 180 pixels to upload. Rectangular images will be cropped from the center of the image. When you post an update, comment or like someone else’s page, your profile picture will appear at 90 x 90 pixels.

Cover Photo: 851 x 310 pixels – Smaller images will stretch to fit the area. For a faster load time, upload an RGB JPG photo that’s less than 100 KB in size. For sharp images, start with a canvas that’s 1656 x 630 pixels (twice the size). Images with text or graphics, use a PNG file.

The cover photos for all Facebook pages aren’t created equal – if you’re creating a fan page, group, or event, the dimensions for your cover photo will be different from the cover photo on your personal page. A properly sized cover image can help boost your Facebook page likes!

Fan Page Cover Photo: 820 x 312 pixels
Group Cover Photo: 820 x 428 pixels
Event Cover Photo: 500 x 262 pixels

Pro Tips:

  • The latest Facebook guidelines indicate that your cover photo is public, and anyone who visits your page will see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Facebook has now removed the stipulation that your cover photo cannot contain more than 20% text.
  • Posts with fewer than 250 characters get more engagement.

LINKEDIN

Profile Picture: 400 x 400 pixels

This is an opportunity to create a powerful and pleasing visual aesthetic for your page. Unlike Facebook, LinkedIn isn’t picky about what you put in your “hero image.” There really are no limitations.

Page Profile Photo: 150 x 150 pixels – This feature is only available for company pages, not personal profiles.

Pro Tip: Use Featured Updates to highlight your best content. Similar to Facebook’s “Highlight” feature and Twitter’s “Pin” feature, LinkedIn allows you to tack your post to the top of your stream so it’s the first thing visitors using the “Feature this Update” function.
