So I was wheeled into surgery and to be honest, I am not sure it was the pain meds or the rush to get healed but I was all for the surgery. I have been trying to piece together the time I went in for the surgery and how long the surgery was but have not been able to. I do get the feeling that I was in surgery for sometime. Mostly based on the Xrays that revealed
1.. A Tibular Plateau fracture. Basically, I destroyed the top of my tibia. The Xrays would show that there was a 15mm cavity in the shin
2..A destroyed meniscus aka cartilage
3..a break in the fibula
4.. And perhaps worse of all the femur the big bone in the thigh had fallen into the cavity.
So I know surgery was extensive. I came out of surgery with 7 pins, a plate and what they call bone plaster to fill the area. I will have them for life. I remember waking up in the hospital room too wired to sleep. I just wanted to get home and begin getting better I do not think that I slept at all after the sedation came out. I have to give my thanks to Doctor Ashman who performed the surgery. Not only was he a great surgeon but gave me a huge sense of confidence. Something very important given the magnitude of the surgery.
I did not know it at the time but rehab would take a lot more than I could have ever thought. And involved discovering new ways of doing almost everything and life on crutches. If you have ever been on crutches you know that even the simplest things like going to the bathroom are hard. I was given the option of a bath seat, a commode, and a toilet raiser and I am so glad I declined all three. Getting to the bathroom was a challenge but was needed to begin the healing process. I just never knew the adventures were just starting.
